Re-Writing Wesley

An Advent Intervention

Abstract

In view of the patent anti-Judaism characterizing the second verse of the popular Charles Wesley Advent hymn “Lo! he comes with clouds descending,” this paper proposes an alternative re-writing. After establishing a background context and the occasion for composing this alternative, the original verse is set side-by-side with the proposed substitute. The paper concludes with a comparative theological commentary.
