Author Guidelines

All submissions must be made via this website on or before 15 February following the Academy meeting each year. Please submit a Microsoft Word or Word compatible document. Formatting and design will be undertaken by the editorial team. 

Participants in the Annual Meeting of the North American Academy of Liturgy are invited to make a submission to this journal. Submissions are of four types:

  • Foreword (from the Editor)
  • Part One–Plenary Sessions: Plenary submissions must consist of the address as delivered at the Annual Meeting. The author is responsible for the accuracy of content, references, and quotations. The plenary sessions include
    • Introduction to the Vice-Presidential Address
    • Vice-Presidential Address
    • Introduction of the Diekmann Recipient (in years this award is granted)
    • Diekmann Award, either a high-resolution, well cropped photo of the award or a text formatted similarly to that of the award (in years this award is granted)
    • Diekmann Response (in years this award is granted)
    • Introduction of the Berakah Recipient
    • Berakah Award, either a high-resolution, well cropped photo of the award or a text formatted similarly to that of the award
    • Berakah Response
    • President's Report to the Academy
  • Part Two–Seminar Reports: Reports from each Seminar Convener using the headings provided below, including:
    • Convener: Seminar Convener's name, email address, and a brief bio including professional role(s) and institutional affiliation(s)
    • Members in Attendance: A list of members in attendance in person and online in alphabetical order (first name, last name)
    • Visitors in Attendance: A list of visitors in attendance in person and online in alphabetical order (first name, last name). N.B. Visitors are those who are not yet full members of the Academy, not Members who do not usually attend your Seminar.
    • Description of Work: One to two paragraphs detailing the work of the Seminar during the meeting
    • Papers and Presentations: A list of papers and presentations delivered during the meeting in the order in which they were delivered, including
      • the author's/presenter's name
      • the title of the paper or presentation in quotation marks ("") + the book title in italics (if the paper is or will be a chapter in a published manuscript)
      • OR the title of the book in italics if a book is being presented
      • a brief description of the paper/presentation/chapter/book
    • Other Work and Future Plans: One to two paragraphs on
      • any activities of the Seminar in addition to papers and presentations
      • any work of the Seminar outside of the annual meeting
      • plans for the next year's meeting 

Conveners should include the following when subimitting their reports; ignore the other requested information.

  1. Section: select Part 2.
  2. The title is the name of your seminar
  3. You, the convener, as "contributor;" do not include seminar members
  • Part Three–Select Seminar Papers
    • Papers submitted for consideration must have been delivered that year at the Annual Meeting and recommended by the Seminar Convener or membership of the Seminar (the exact process is up to each Seminar). Please indicate the Seminar in which the paper was delivered and the mode of recommendation received.
    • Remove any identifying information to enable the anonymouse review process. N.B. you will still enter your biographical/institutional information when you register with PKP, which enables you to submit your paper.
    • Submissions for part three should ordinarily not exceed twenty–­five double–­spaced pages, with 1” margins and a standard 12–­point font (approximately 7,500 words, excluding documentation).
    • All submissions for Part 3 will be assessed by the Editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent to the Editorial Advisory Board for peer review before determining whether
      • the paper is accepted without revisions
      • the paper is accepted with minor revisions
      • the paper is accepted conditionally pending major revisions
      • the paper is rejected
    • The Editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. Appropriate headings and subheadings should be used. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Style

Proceedings follows the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, Documentation One (footnote/endnote).

Spelling is arbitrated with Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and its chief abridgement, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Full bibliographic information should be included in the first reference. Subsequent references should be shortened.

There should be no free-­standing bibliography.

All submissions will undergo copyediting, layout design, and proofreading.

Editorial changes that do not materially affect the meaning of the text may be introduced by the Editor without consultation with the author.

Before making a submission, authors contributing to all parts of Proceedings are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness and follow the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (Documentation One).
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • All special characters or diacritics appear correctly in your text. 
  • All images have been embedded and are of sufficient resolution. If not, please also upload high-resolution image files.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.
